Lakeside Animal Hospital Conventional Services

Diagnostic services:

Whether your pet needs basic or advanced diagnostics to identify what is wrong, we can help. Our doctors are experienced at resolving even complicated medical problems. We can perform many diagnostic procedures right here in our hospital, from identifying what exactly that mysterious new lump on your cat or dog is, to performing x-rays, checking blood pressure, and running blood and urine tests. We also utilize the finest medical laboratories in the area, to insure fast, accurate results. Our veterinarians work closely with specialists in all areas of veterinary medicine, including cardiologists (heart), dental specialists, dermatologists (skin), imaging specialists (ultrasound, MRI, CAT scans), orthopedic surgeons (bones and joints), oncologists (cancer), and ophthalmologists (eyes).

Vaccinations:

Your dog or cat may be over vaccinated! Today's ideal on vaccinations is "individualized." That means that we prescribe vaccine protocols to fit your pet's specific lifestyle and needs, after a careful discussion with you about the risks your pet faces. We'll explain what your pet needs - and what your pet doesn't need - and why. We'll also tell you about today's alternatives to yearly vaccines. All of our staff members are up to date on the newest vaccine recommendations. And these aren't just our ideas - they represent input from major veterinary groups such as the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Association of Feline Practitioners, and the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. All of these groups have published statements attesting to the need to be cautious about vaccines. Let us tailor a vaccination plan that’s right for just your pet.

Titers:

What is a titer?

  • A titer is a test of your pet’s blood to look for antibodies against diseases.
  • Titers are available to determine if your pet is still producing antibodies against diseases routinely vaccinated against.

Why Titer?

  • You may choose to have your pets blood tested for these antibodies to avoid having to unnecessarily revaccinate your pet for a disease it may already be protected against.
  • Some health problems, such as allergies and autoimmune disease are aggravated by revaccination. This means symptoms may recur or become more severe after a vaccination is given. This can be life threatening.
  • Nevada state law dictated all dogs, cats, and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Veterinarians can exempt pets from vaccination that have certain health problems. If your pet has a health concern that would be aggravated by vaccination it can be exempt. In this instance, we recommend testing your pet’s blood to ensure its body is still producing adequate antibodies to protect it against rabies. This is called a Rabies titer.

Please discuss titer options for your pet with a staff member prior to your vaccination appointment.

Food Therapy :

Lakeside Animal Hospital believes that your pet's diet is an important basic element in a preventative medical approach. No amount of supplementation or medication will correct a bad diet! If you're feeding just a dry kibbled diet or a canned diet, your dog or cat is NOT getting all the important nutrients necessary to maintain vibrant good health. Our doctors offer in-hospital veterinary nutrition consultations. During a consultation, we'll review the adequacy of what your pet is currently eating. Then we'll discuss whether fresh food additions, digestive enzyme supplementation or probiotic and vitamin supplementation are indicated for your pet. Just call to schedule your appointment -- we'll be glad to help!

Microchiping:

You can provide your dogs and cats with safe lifetime protection that can never be lost by having a microchip implanted. The microchip - about the size of a grain of rice - can be easily implanted into the skin between the shoulder blades by one of our trained veterinary nurses. It's a sad fact that over 85% of straying pets are recovered without any collar or tag identification. You can maximize the opportunity to be reunited with your pet by calling for a microchipping appointment. A microchip provides permanent, lifetime identification that can never be lost.

Dentistry:

Healthy teeth and gums are key to your pet's good health. Lakeside Animal Hospital can put together a comprehensive plan to improve your pet's health, starting with good dental hygiene. Regular professional care of your dog's or cat's teeth and gums is necessary for most pets, just as it is for you. Lakeside Animal Hospital SurgeryThe old, tired adage that eating a dry pet food maintains healthy teeth just isn't true, any more than eating only dry, hard food would maintain your teeth without help from a dentist! Our veterinary dental facility is fully equipped for procedures ranging from routine cleaning and polishing to surgical extractions and intraoral x-rays. We use the same individualized anesthetic plans and monitoring for your pet as we would in our surgical suite.

Surgery:

If your dog or cat needs surgery, our doctors are excellent soft tissue surgeons. But that's only the start. We offer the latest in anesthetic and monitoring techniques to make surgery as safe as possible for your pet, from start to finish. The anesthesia is carefully calculated, and based on the patient's weight, body type, and breed. Each surgery patient is under constant supervision by a highly trained nurse. Surgical monitoring includes, but is certainly not limited to, steady monitoring and record-keeping of the patient's heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, pulse oximetry. And, we offer an integrated approach to pain management that incorporates elements of traditional non-steroidal medications, homeopathics, herbal medicine, and acupuncture.
